Litomyšl City

Litomyšl, a both modern and historical city, enchants with the palace complex with a renaissance Litomyšl Palace (UNESCO). This is exactly the place where the composer, Bedřich Smetana, was born!

Litomyšl is a city full of historical and modern elements and bustles with rich cultural life. The city market square, one of the longest in the Czech Republic, is enclosed with arcades of renaissance, baroque and Empire-style tenement houses on both sides. A gothic city hall with a contemporary astronomical clock (orloj) and a renaissance townhouse U Rytířů overlook the city centre. The baroque architecture representative is the Piarist College with the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross and a former Piarist grammar schools. The greatest gem of the urban conservation area is the Litomyšl Palace with an extraordinary sgraffito ornaments and exceptional interiors. The palace, along with the surrounding area, was added to the UNESCO list in 1999.

In the city, you can take a so-called Recommended Sightseeing Route which covers all most significant monuments in Litomyšl. Various events take place here, as well, for example, Smetana’s Litomyšl music festival.
