Orlické Mountains – Earth’s Gate

Popular place for excursions, under protection as a nature reserve. The name refers to the rocky section of the Divoká Orlice (“Wild Eagle”) river which, near a place called Čihák, breaks a lowered ridge of the Orlické Mountains.

The river carved out in a tough, yet cracked gneiss, a romantic valley, making its way further into the country. The narrow riverbed dotted with boulders is surrounded by distinctive gneiss rocks along the section of a few hundred metres, with a shape resembling a gate through which the river enters the territory of the Czech Republic. This impression is even more strengthened by a single-arched bridge at the beginning of the valley – this is where the road from České Petrovice to Bartošovice in the Orlické Mountains runs through.
