Krkonoše National Park

The first national park in the Czech Republic, created in 1963, and since 1992, it has been one of the UNESCO biosphere reserves. Its area of 363 km2 plus 186 km2 of a protective zone covers the highest part of the Krkonoše Mountains and a part of its foothills. The park protects particularly unique landscape values.

Krkonoše – a tundra island in the middle of Europe – are a unique mosaic of mountain ecosystems. Mountain slopes are covered with dense forests and meadows, upper parts of the plain ridges – with mountain pine, alpine grasses and bogs. The areas of the cirque, formed as a result of the past glacial activities, are also species-rich. Due to the exceptional value of the landscape, a national park was founded here in 1963. The Management Board of the Krkonoše National Park with its offices in Vrchlabí manages the whole area.
