This was one of the significant pillars of the Czechoslovakia defensive fortification system, which was to provide covering fire for the infantry bunkers and blockhouses along with the Bouda and Adam fortresses.
The fortress became a testing centre for new German weapons during the Second World War. The Hůrka Artillery Fortress has been open to the public since 2012 and it is the largest fully accessible structure from the Czechoslovak fortifications.
