Wodzisław Śląski

Since the town’s foundation in the 13th century, the Market Square in Wodzisław has been its most important square and at the same time one of the biggest market squares in the Silesian Province.

It is square in shape, covering an area of almost one hectare. The contemporary buildings are tenement houses reconstructed after the great fire that struck the town in 1822. The most notable buildings are those located in the immediate vicinity of the market square. These include the historic church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary towering over it, which was originally erected during the period of the town's foundation, and the Dietrichstein Palace, located near the south-eastern corner of the city. It was named after its former owners, who were probably the first to erect a building on this site. After the aforementioned fire, the former castle was converted into a palace in the French Baroque Classicist style. At the entrance door, one can notice a triangular fronton with a two shield cartouche - these are the family coats of arms of the Dietrichstein and Henckel von Donnersmarck families. The palace is surrounded by a small, neatly maintained scenic park. The building houses the City Museum and the Civil Registry Office.
